World Robotics - Industrial Robot Report 2018 published
The new World Robotics Report shows that a new record high of 381,000 units were shipped globally in 2017 – an increase of 30 percent compared to the previous year. This means that the annual sales volume of industrial robots increased by 114 percent over the last five years (2013-2017). The sales value increased by 21 percent compared to 2016 to a new peak of US$16.2 billion in 2017.

EThe Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) traditional PC market (desktops, notebooks, and workstations) continued to stabilize in the first quarter of 2017, with the market posting modest growth (1.6%) and totaling 17.4 million units, according to International Data Corporation (IDC). Notebooks performed strongly across EMEA (8.9% YoY), growing 9.2% in Western Europe and 8.3% in CEMA. The push to avoid price increases following component shortages and the inventory build-up in Western Europe, together with favorable exchange rates against the dollar in CEMA, fueled commercial notebooks, which grew 18.6% in CEMA and 11.2% in Western Europe. Consumer notebooks returned to growth in Central and Eastern Europe (8.1%) and Western Europe (7.5%) thanks to some previous quarter backlogs. Overall desktop shipments continued to decline, posting a 12.0% decrease in EMEA.

The European Commission recently unveiled plans aimed at reducing marine pollution from plastics in the European Union (EU). The measures envisage banning certain single-use plastics, reductions in the use of plastic food containers and drinks cups at the national level and requirements for producers to help cover the costs of waste management and clean-up. We believe the proposals, if adopted in their current form by the European Parliament and EU member states, could result in some incremental cost for European plastic packaging manufacturers and further increase pressure on the industry to design for sustainability and use more recycled materials. However, we consider the proposed ban on certain single-use plastic packaging products as immaterial for rated European plastic packaging companies because they do not tend to produce these products.

According to research by International Data Corporation (IDC), the Western European printer and multifunction peripheral (MFP) market decreased by 1.6% in unit terms in Q118 compared with the same period a year ago. This is a smaller decline than was originally forecast and for some OEMs the quarter was a rather productive start to the year with many reporting year on year increases. The market decline was less than 100K and most of this contraction was from monochrome lasers rather than consumer inkjets.

International Data Corporation's (IDC) EMEA Server Tracker shows that in the first quarter of 2017 the EMEA server market reported a year-on-year (YoY) decline in vendor revenues of 12.7% to $2.7 billion and a YoY decrease of 1.4% in units shipped to just over 530,000. Looking at the EMEA market in euros, reported revenues in 1Q17 declined 9.6% YoY.
